Role overview

We are looking for an experienced Tax Reviewer / US Tax Preparer to support a growing accounting team with hands-on tax preparation, return review, and year-round accounting support. This role is best suited for someone who can work independently, prepare accurate returns, review work with confidence, and step into a fast-moving environment without heavy supervision.

The ideal candidate brings stronger tax depth than a junior preparer, with solid experience in both tax and bookkeeping. This person should be comfortable balancing tax-season priorities with ongoing accounting work such as reconciliations, financial statement support, QuickBooks cleanups, and variance review.

Key responsibilities

  • Prepare accurate federal and state tax returns for individuals and businesses
  • Review completed returns carefully to identify errors, omissions, and inconsistencies before filing
  • Work on tax returns directly, not just support tasks or client follow-up
  • Use Drake Software to prepare, review, and manage tax filings and related records
  • Maintain clean and organized tax workpapers and digital files
  • Support year-round accounting work, including bank reconciliations and general bookkeeping tasks
  • Assist with financial statement preparation and review
  • Perform QuickBooks Online cleanups, transaction review, and variance analysis
  • Flag issues, unusual transactions, or missing documentation early
  • Communicate clearly with internal team members when clarification or correction is needed

Requirements

  • 5+ years of tax preparation experience
  • Strong hands-on experience preparing US tax returns for individuals and businesses
  • Ability to review tax work with a high level of accuracy and sound judgment
  • Working knowledge of current US tax rules, filing requirements, and tax workflows
  • Strong experience with Drake Software
  • Strong experience with QuickBooks Online
  • Solid bookkeeping and accounting fundamentals
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently
  • Ability to manage deadlines and maintain quality during busy periods
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills

Nice to have

  • CPA, Enrolled Agent, or equivalent advanced tax credential
  • Experience reviewing the work of other preparers or junior team members
  • Experience in public accounting, CPA firms, or multi-client environments
  • Experience with financial statements, account reconciliations, and cleanup work outside tax season
  • Familiarity with individual returns such as Form 1040 and related schedules, plus business returns

What success looks like in this role

  • Tax returns are prepared accurately and ready for timely filing
  • Review comments are thoughtful, clear, and catch issues before submission
  • Books and tax files stay organized, current, and easy to audit or hand off
  • QuickBooks records are kept clean and reliable for reporting and tax preparation
  • The team can trust this person to handle both tax work and broader accounting support with minimal oversight
