Overview

Our client is looking for a Sheet Metal Drafting & Estimating Specialist to take full ownership of production shop drawings, material quantification, and pre-fabrication technical support for custom Australian metal fabrication projects. In this role, you will work directly alongside the Production Manager and Managing Directors to convert architectural blueprints into buildable 2D/3D fabrication drawings. You will also perform precise material takeoffs to support project quoting and optimize shop floor procurement. The ideal candidate pairs deep sheet metal manufacturing knowledge with high drafting accuracy and strong technical independence.

Schedule:

• Monday to Friday | 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM AEST (Sydney / Brisbane Time), Full-Time | 40 hours per week (Includes a 30-minute paid daily break)

Responsibilities

Shop Drawing Production & Technical Drafting

• Produce clear, buildable shop drawings for custom sheet metal projects, including stainless steel benches, commercial kitchens, structural frames, and architectural metalwork.
• Interpret architectural blueprints and engineering specifications, converting them into precise 2D/3D fabrication drawings with complete dimensions, material callouts, and bend details.
• Ensure all technical drawings strictly comply with Australian fabrication standards and shop floor manufacturing capabilities.
• Collaborate with the Production Manager to prioritize drafting outputs and align CAD deliverables with factory build schedules.

Material Takeoffs & Estimating Support

• Perform accurate material takeoffs and quantity surveys to support project quoting and cost estimation for incoming tenders.
• Calculate material requirements, hardware lists, and cut sheets to minimize shop floor scrap rates and optimize procurement.
• Communicate regularly with production leadership and company directors to address design queries, clarify tolerances, and update project timelines.

Technical Stack & Tools

• Drafting & CAD Software: Python-based CAD drafting tools, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Fusion 360
• Estimation & Spreadsheets: Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, Digital Takeoff Tools
• Communication & Management: Microsoft Teams, Slack, Email, Cloud Storage Platforms

Requirements

• Fabrication & Drafting Experience: Proven track record producing shop drawings and material takeoffs specifically for sheet metal, commercial kitchen, or architectural metal fabrication.
• Technical & Manufacturing Knowledge: Deep understanding of custom metal fabrication techniques, material gauges, bend allowances, assembly details, and shop fitting processes.
• Drafting Agility & Software Fluency: Proficiency in Python-based drafting software (or strong CAD background with the capacity to adapt quickly to specialized tools).
• Meticulous Precision: Exceptional eye for detail when verifying dimensions, material specifications, and tolerance requirements.
