Senior Australian Tax Bookkeeper (Xero)

Job Overview

Our client, an Australian accounting practice, is looking for a seasoned Senior Xero Bookkeeper with advanced, hands-on expertise in Australian taxation, comprehensive bookkeeping, and corporate regulatory frameworks. This is a full ownership role — you'll be taking end-to-end responsibility for BAS compliance, payroll processing, account reconciliations, and financial reporting across a portfolio of clients. Precision, reliability, and a deep understanding of Australian financial frameworks are non-negotiable.

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM AEST/AEDT, with 1 hour unpaid break (40 work hours per week)

Responsibilities

BAS & Tax Compliance

  • Prepare, audit, and lodge Business Activity Statements (BAS) and Instalment Activity Statements (IAS) in full compliance with current ATO regulations and Australian taxation law
  • Monitor legislative changes and ensure ongoing compliance across all client accounts

Payroll & Accounts

  • Manage end-to-end payroll operations including superannuation, STP reporting, and leave management
  • Oversee accounts payable and receivable (AP/AR) with accuracy and efficiency
  • Execute complex account reconciliations and meticulously audit source documentation

EOFY & Reporting

  • Prepare and finalise End of Financial Year (EOFY) accounts and statements in line with regulatory standards
  • Generate financial reports and provide clear, accurate financial summaries for clients and stakeholders
  • Maintain data integrity across all financial records through precise transaction coding and entry

Client & Portfolio Management

  • Manage bookkeeping across multiple client accounts simultaneously
  • Liaise professionally with clients on financial queries, deadlines, and compliance requirements
  • Identify and flag discrepancies, risks, or issues proactively

Requirements

  • Demonstrated background in a senior bookkeeping, client accounting services (CAS), or corporate accounting role
  • Deep, first-hand experience managing Australian taxation requirements — BAS, payroll compliance, superannuation, and STP
  • Advanced, daily proficiency in Xero and its associated ecosystem — this is strictly required
  • Exceptional organisational and time-management skills with a proven ability to meet tight regulatory deadlines
  • Highly detail-oriented, reliable, and trustworthy when handling confidential financial information
  • Strong communication skills for client-facing interaction
  • Experience managing multiple client accounts simultaneously in a practice environment
