Role Overview:
You will take full responsibility for the air conditioning element of tenders, producing accurate and comprehensive take-offs from drawings, specifications and equipment schedules.
The role requires detailed knowledge of AC equipment, refrigeration pipework, refrigerant requirements, OFN, controls, cabling, containment, bracketry and supports, together with a strong practical understanding of how these systems are installed.
About the Opportunity:
Our client is a UK-based construction estimating firm specialising in accurate pre-construction cost estimation, detailed quantity take-offs and tender support. The business provides contractors with reliable estimating services across multiple construction trades, supporting them in assessing project costs and preparing competitive tenders.
Due to an increasing volume of AC-only tenders, our client is looking to add an experienced Senior Air Conditioning Estimator to the estimating team. This role is ideal for someone with strong experience in Air Conditioning estimating within the UK construction industry and extensive practical knowledge of DX splits, multi-splits, VRF and VRV systems.
This is a specialist estimating position and is not suitable for general mechanical estimators or trainees. The successful candidate must be able to work independently from tender drawings, specifications and equipment schedules through to a complete AC take-off, without requiring technical supervision.
Schedule:
- Monday to Friday, flexible schedule within the client’s business hours (UK Time, 20 hours per week)
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Review UK tender drawings, specifications and equipment schedules to identify the complete AC scope.
- Independently complete take-offs for DX split, multi-split, VRF and VRV systems.
- Identify and quantify heat pump and heat recovery systems and condensing units.
- Take off indoor fan coil units, including cassette, ducted, wall-mounted and floor-mounted units.
- Identify and quantify BS/branch selector boxes, branch joints, REFNET joints and headers.
- Complete detailed refrigeration pipework take-offs from drawings.
- Identify liquid, suction and gas pipework and determine required pipe sizes.
- Apply manufacturer-specific pipe sizing requirements and system limitations.
- Quantify refrigeration fittings, reducers, joints, specialist branch components and pipe insulation.
- Calculate additional refrigerant charge based on system configuration and pipe lengths.
- Calculate OFN requirements for purging, pressure testing and commissioning.
- Take off cable tray and containment, including bends, tees, risers and associated fittings.
- Quantify bracketry and support systems, including Unistrut, threaded rod, channel and associated fixings.
- Account for AC power requirements, interconnecting power and control cabling, communications cabling and associated containment.
- Include local controllers, thermostats, central controls, condensate pipework where applicable, and associated installation materials.
KPI Expectations:
- Complete accurate and comprehensive AC take-offs from tender drawings, specifications and schedules.
- Deliver complete DX, VRF and VRV estimates independently and without technical supervision.
- Accurately quantify equipment, refrigeration pipework, insulation, refrigerant, OFN, controls, cabling, containment and supports.
- Apply manufacturer-specific technical requirements accurately within each estimate.
- Identify the full AC scope and minimise omissions, discrepancies and estimating errors.
What We’re Looking For:
- Extensive professional experience specifically in Air Conditioning estimating.
- Strong experience within the UK construction industry.
- Proven experience estimating DX split and multi-split systems.
- Extensive experience estimating VRF and VRV systems.
- Strong understanding of heat pump and heat recovery systems.
- Experience with condensing units and indoor fan coil units.
- Strong familiarity with Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Toshiba and LG systems.
- Proven ability to complete refrigeration pipework take-offs and determine correct pipe sizes.
- Understanding of manufacturer-specific refrigeration pipe sizing and system limitations.
- Ability to calculate additional refrigerant requirements from system configuration and pipe lengths.
- Understanding of OFN requirements for purging, pressure testing and commissioning.
- Strong knowledge of AC electrical requirements, controls, cabling, containment and support systems.
- Ability to take full responsibility for a complete AC estimate without technical supervision.
Nice to Have:
- Estimating experience across Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Toshiba and LG systems.
- Experience with VRF / VRV heat recovery arrangements and BS/branch selector boxes.
- Strong understanding of refrigeration installation and commissioning procedures.
- Experience estimating complete AC containment and support requirements.
Who You Are:
- An experienced Air Conditioning Estimator with genuine specialist AC expertise.
- Technically confident and able to work independently.
- Highly accurate with strong attention to detail.
- Practical and knowledgeable about real-world AC installation requirements.
- Comfortable taking complete ownership of an estimate from tender documentation through to final take-off.
What We Offer:
- Part-time opportunity with a UK-based construction estimating firm.
- Specialist focus on AC-only tenders.
- Opportunity to work across DX, VRF and VRV systems.
- Remote working arrangement.
- Opportunity to take ownership of complete AC estimating requirements.
Independent Contractor Perks:
- Permanent work from home
- Immediate hiring
