AU Residential Construction Accountant (Xero)

Are you an AU Residential Construction Accountant with over 3 years of experience who excels at translating complex financial data into actionable business insights?

In this remote role supporting an Australian company, you will manage end-to-end accounting processes, apply strong double-entry principles, and deliver clear financial visibility to guide executive decisions. You will oversee cash flow, reconciliations, and stakeholder coordination while supporting Australian tax and compliance processes alongside an authorized tax adviser. Proven expertise in end-to-end financial operations and industry controls will be vital to succeeding in this role. 

Client Overview:

The client is an Australian residential construction and property development business based in Springfield Lakes, Queensland. The company specialises in residential construction, new home builds, renovations and minor works, full design services, pre-construction services, landscaping and related property improvements. The client has more than 10 years of industry experience and positions itself around quality workmanship, customer service and end-to-end project delivery. As the business continues to grow, our client is looking for a highly capable Accountant to provide accurate, timely, and commercially useful financial support across its day-to-day operations and construction projects.

Schedule:

Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM AEST, with 1 hour unpaid break (40 work hours per week) 

Responsibilities:

General Accounting

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records.
  • Record and classify financial transactions accurately.
  • Perform regular bank, credit card, and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Maintain the general ledger and supporting schedules.
  • Review transactions for accuracy, completeness and correct coding.
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies promptly.
  • Maintain organised and audit-ready financial documentation.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end accounting processes.

Accounts Payable

  • Process supplier and subcontractor invoices.
  • Verify invoices against purchase orders, contracts, approvals, and project requirements where applicable.
  • Ensure invoices are correctly coded to the appropriate account, project, or cost centre.
  • Monitor supplier payment due dates.
  • Prepare payment schedules and payment runs for approval.
  • Reconcile supplier statements.
  • Follow up on outstanding documentation or disputed invoices.
  • Maintain accurate records of supplier balances.

Accounts Receivable

  • Prepare and issue customer invoices.
  • Monitor outstanding receivables and payment status.
  • Reconcile customer accounts.
  • Follow up on overdue invoices professionally.
  • Maintain accurate debtor records.
  • Escalate material or long-outstanding debts to management.
  • Assist with improving the company's cash collection processes.

Construction Accounting & Project Financials

  • Track project-related income and expenditure.
  • Allocate costs accurately to individual construction projects.
  • Monitor project budgets against actual expenditure.
  • Review subcontractor, supplier and material costs.
  • Identify unusual cost movements, variances or potential budget overruns.
  • Assist management in understanding project profitability.
  • Maintain project cost reports and supporting documentation.
  • Assist with forecasting project cash requirements.
  • Support management with financial analysis of current and completed projects.

Financial Reporting Prepare accurate and easy-to-understand management reports, including:

  • Profit and loss statements.
  • Balance sheet reports.
  • Cash flow reports.
  • Accounts payable ageing.
  • Accounts receivable ageing.
  • Budget vs actual reports.
  • Project profitability reports.
  • Expense analysis.
  • Monthly financial summaries.
  • Other management reports as required.

The Accountant should be able to translate financial data into business insights, rather than simply producing reports.

BAS, GST & Australian Compliance Support

  • Maintain accurate records required for Australian tax and accounting compliance.
  • Assist with BAS preparation and supporting reconciliations.
  • Ensure GST transactions are appropriately recorded.
  • Prepare financial information required by the company's external accountant or tax adviser.
  • Assist with year-end accounts and tax preparation.
  • Maintain supporting documentation for compliance purposes.
  • Liaise with external accountants when required.

Note: The role will support Australian tax and compliance processes but will operate under the direction of the company's authorised accountant/tax adviser where professional sign-off is required.

Payroll & Employee-Related Accounting

  • Assist with payroll processing and reconciliation where required.
  • Maintain accurate payroll-related accounting records.
  • Reconcile payroll liabilities.
  • Assist with superannuation and other payroll-related reconciliations.
  • Ensure payroll-related transactions are correctly recorded.

Cash Flow Management

  • Maintain visibility over incoming and outgoing cash.
  • Monitor upcoming supplier, subcontractor, tax and other financial obligations.
  • Assist with weekly and monthly cash flow forecasting.
  • Identify potential cash flow pressure points early.
  • Provide management with forward-looking information to support payment and purchasing decisions.
  • Help ensure project expenditure is aligned with available cash and approved budgets.

Financial Controls & Process Improvement

  • Identify weaknesses, inefficiencies or risks within accounting processes.
  • Recommend improvements to financial workflows.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate reconciliation procedures.
  • Improve the accuracy and consistency of financial data.
  • Help standardise invoice, approval and payment processes.
  • Develop spreadsheets and reporting tools where appropriate.
  • Automate repetitive accounting tasks where practical.
  • Maintain strong confidentiality and financial controls.

Requirements:

Essential:

  • 3+ years of professional accounting or senior bookkeeping experience.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and double-entry bookkeeping.
  • Experience managing end-to-end accounting processes.
  • Strong accounts payable and accounts receivable experience.
  • Experience with bank and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Strong Excel/Google Sheets skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and numerical accuracy.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication.
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines consistently.
  • High level of confidentiality and financial integrity.

Highly Desirable:

  • Experience working with an Australian company.
  • Construction or property industry accounting experience (including project costing, job costing, construction budgets, WIP reporting, retentions, and progress claims).
  • Experience with Xero, MYOB, or QuickBooks Online.
  • Experience preparing or supporting BAS/GST processes.
  • Experience with Australian payroll and superannuation processes.
  • Experience with job costing or project accounting.
  • Experience preparing management accounts and cash flow forecasting.
  • Experience working with external accountants, auditors or tax advisers.

Technology & Systems Preferred systems experience:

  • Xero
  • Microsoft Excel / Google Sheets
  • Microsoft 365 / Google Workspace
  • Dext or similar receipt/invoice management platforms
  • Project management or construction management software
  • MYOB / QuickBooks Online

Qualifications:

  • CPA, CA, ACCA, or equivalent accounting qualification (Highly Desirable).
