Tax-Focused Accountant

Employment Type: Full-Time Work Setup: Remote

About Client: is a growing in-home care provider that helps Medicaid-eligible individuals access quality care while allowing them to choose trusted caregivers, including family members and friends. The company currently operates across Georgia and Indiana and manages a growing network of patients and caregivers. As the company continues to scale, they are looking for a Tax-Focused Accountant to strengthen its financial operations, maintain accurate books, and ensure timely and accurate tax compliance.

About the Role: The Tax-Focused Accountant will be responsible for managing day-to-day accounting activities while serving as the internal subject-matter expert on U.S. tax preparation, tax compliance, and tax planning. This role is ideal for an accountant who is highly experienced with U.S. taxes and can go beyond recording transactions—someone who can review financial data, identify potential tax issues or savings opportunities, prepare supporting schedules, and work closely with external tax professionals or management when needed. The ideal candidate has strong knowledge of U.S. federal and state taxation, accounting principles, payroll-related tax requirements, and financial reporting.

Key Responsibilities

Tax Preparation & Compliance

• Prepare and organize financial information and supporting schedules for federal, state, and local tax filings.

• Assist with preparation and review of business tax returns and related tax documentation.

• Research and interpret applicable U.S. tax laws, regulations, and filing requirements.

• Monitor tax filing deadlines and ensure required documents and information are prepared on time.

• Review transactions and financial records for potential tax implications.

• Assist with tax notices, correspondence, and inquiries from tax authorities.

• Coordinate with external CPAs, tax preparers, payroll providers, and other financial professionals as needed.

Tax Planning & Advisory

• Identify legitimate tax-saving opportunities and recommend strategies to management.

• Analyze the tax impact of business decisions, expenditures, and operational changes.

• Assist with estimated tax planning and forecasting.

• Monitor changes in federal and state tax regulations that may affect the business.

• Help ensure the company's accounting practices support accurate and defensible tax reporting.

Accounting & Bookkeeping

• Maintain accurate general ledger accounts and financial records.

• Perform monthly bank, credit card, and account reconciliations. • Review income and expense transactions for proper classification and documentation.

• Prepare and maintain supporting schedules for financial statements and tax filings.

• Assist with month-end and year-end close activities.

• Investigate and resolve accounting discrepancies.

• Maintain organized financial documentation and audit-ready records.

Payroll & Multi-State Support

• Review payroll-related accounting entries and ensure payroll expenses are properly recorded.

• Assist with payroll tax reconciliation and reporting.

• Support compliance with applicable state and local tax requirements.

• Help identify potential tax and accounting issues associated with operating across multiple states.

Financial Reporting & Analysis

• Prepare periodic financial reports and management summaries. • Analyze financial data and identify unusual variances or discrepancies.

• Provide management with accurate financial information to support business decisions.

• Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and cash-flow analysis as needed.

Requirements • 4+ years of professional accounting experience, with significant U.S. tax experience.

• Strong understanding of U.S. federal and state taxation.

• Hands-on experience preparing or supporting U.S. business tax returns.

• Strong knowledge of bookkeeping, general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and financial reporting.

• Experience with payroll accounting and payroll tax concepts.

• Experience working with businesses operating in multiple U.S. states is highly preferred.

• Strong proficiency in QuickBooks Online or similar accounting software.

• Strong Excel/Google Sheets skills.

• Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.

• Ability to independently research tax rules and resolve accounting/tax issues.

• Strong written and verbal English communication skills.

• Ability to handle confidential financial and business information with discretion.

Preferred Qualifications

• CPA, EA, or equivalent U.S. tax/accounting credential.

• Experience working with healthcare, home care, Medicaid, or other regulated service businesses.

• Experience with multi-state tax compliance.

• Experience coordinating with U.S.-based CPAs or tax firms.

• Knowledge of payroll tax filings, sales/use tax, and other state/local tax obligations.

• Experience with tax preparation software such as ProSeries, Lacerte, UltraTax, Drake, or similar platforms. Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate is a tax accountant first and a general accountant second. They should be comfortable getting into the details of a company's books, understanding how transactions affect taxes, and proactively identifying issues before they become problems. We're looking for someone who can:

• Own the accuracy and organization of financial records.

• Understand the why behind the numbers, not simply enter transactions.

• Spot tax risks and potential savings opportunities.

• Work independently and meet strict tax and accounting deadlines.

• Communicate financial and tax matters clearly to non-accounting stakeholders.

• Handle sensitive financial information with a high degree of confidentiality.

• Adapt to a growing, multi-state healthcare/home-care business.

Key Success Measures Success in this role will be measured by:

• Accurate and timely tax preparation and compliance support.

• Clean, reconciled, and well-maintained accounting records.

• Minimal accounting and tax discrepancies.

• Timely identification of tax risks and filing requirements.

• Effective tax planning and identification of legitimate savings opportunities.

• Accurate payroll and tax-related accounting.

• Reliable financial reporting for management.

• Strong organization of tax and accounting documentation.
