About the Role

We are looking for a highly organized and detail-oriented Assistant Accountant to join our finance team on a full-time basis.

Following a review of our finance department structure, this role has been designed to provide end-to-end finance support across both bookkeeping and accounting functions. The successful candidate will work closely with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Operations Manager, and Managing Director, supporting daily financial operations while assisting with financial reporting, compliance, and process improvements.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys taking ownership of finance functions, improving efficiencies through automation, and working collaboratively within a growing business.

Key Responsibilities

Bookkeeping & Financial Operations

  • Manage Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions.
  • Process supplier invoices and prepare payment runs.
  • Prepare and issue customer invoices, progress claims, and related documentation.
  • Maintain accurate financial records within Xero.
  • Perform daily bank, credit card, and general ledger reconciliations.
  • Reconcile project costs, job costing records, and financial transactions.

Payroll & Compliance

  • Process payroll accurately and on time.
  • Manage Superannuation obligations and Single Touch Payroll (STP) reporting.
  • Prepare and assist with the lodgement of BAS and IAS in accordance with Australian Taxation Office (ATO) requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with Australian accounting standards, tax regulations, and company policies.

Financial Reporting & Analysis

  • Assist with month-end close activities, including journals, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Support budgeting, cash flow forecasting, and management reporting.
  • Prepare financial analysis and ad hoc reports to support business decision-making.
  • Liaise with external accountants, auditors, and financial advisors as required.

Process Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve finance processes, reporting accuracy, automation, and operational efficiency.
  • Support the implementation of improved financial systems and workflows.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across the finance department.

Required Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Proven experience in both bookkeeping and accounting functions.
  • Strong understanding of Australian accounting principles, taxation, and compliance requirements.
  • Advanced experience using Xero.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including formulas, PivotTables, and financial reporting.
  • Experience managing Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, payroll, reconciliations, and month-end processes.
  • High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and organizational skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with senior management.

Preferred

  • Experience working within Australian businesses.
  • Experience in the construction, insurance, property restoration, or project-based industries.
  • Familiarity with purchase order systems and job costing software.
  • Experience supporting budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities.
  • Knowledge of finance process automation and workflow improvements.
