AI Product Engineer (Codex)

Job Overview

Our client is looking for a AI Product Engineer to help design, build, stabilise and productise OpenClaw Mission Control. This is not a narrow bug-fixing role and it is not limited to progressing a bounded task spreadsheet. The role is to help build the entire application into a safe, usable, local-first product. The developer will operate like a founding engineer, understanding the product vision, identifying gaps, proposing sensible architecture, converting rough objectives into buildable work, and keeping the project moving in an organised and safe manner.

Schedule

  • Monday - Friday, 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM AEST, with 1 hour unpaid break (40 work hours per week)

Responsibilities Product and Architecture

  • Map the current repository architecture and identify what should be preserved, repaired, extended or retired.
  • Design pragmatic architecture for the project OS, agent system, approval layer, integrations and local execution model.
  • Plan development in phases that progressively move the product from prototype to stable application.
  • Avoid unnecessary wholesale rewrites while still being willing to recommend architectural change where the current structure is genuinely blocking the product.

Implementation

  • Implement frontend, backend, bridge, IPC, local-state, Python and JavaScript/TypeScript changes as required.
  • Build deterministic command routing so core product commands do not unnecessarily fall into slow general chat or intake paths.
  • Create robust project, room, agent, workflow and action interfaces.
  • Add provider integrations, local model options and fallback logic in a maintainable way.
  • Improve UX so that the application can be used by a non-technical person.

Testing, Quality and Release Discipline

  • Write and run practical smoke tests, regression tests and user-flow tests.
  • Maintain release notes, change summaries, branch notes and implementation logs.
  • Use pull requests, code review and mandatory checks appropriately.
  • Ensure each major change is demonstrably safer, more stable or more capable than the previous version.
  • Identify and document known risks, limitations and follow-up work.

AI-Agent Supervision

  • Use Codex and other AI agents as development partners while retaining human responsibility for final code quality.
  • Review AI-generated work carefully before merge or release.
  • Prevent AI agents from making unapproved changes to credentials, production settings, external accounts or destructive actions.
  • Create repeatable workflows for safe AI-assisted development.

Requirements

  • Mandatory requirement: The candidate must have practical access to, and working proficiency with, Codex from the commencement of the engagement.
  • Ability to use Codex as part of the development workflow, review Codex outputs critically, and convert agent-generated work into stable, tested, auditable production code.
  • Ability to treat Codex as an engineering accelerator, prompting, supervising, testing, criticizing, correcting, and integrating its output without substituting human engineering accountability.
  • Ability to give Codex clear implementation prompts tied to product goals, architecture, and safety constraints.
  • Ability to review Codex diffs and identify overreach, regressions, unsafe patterns, hallucinated files or brittle implementations.

Independent Contractor Perks

  • Health Insurance Coverage for eligible locations
  • Permanent work from home
  • Immediate hiring

Note

Please click the "Apply" button to complete your application, including the assessment questions, technical check, and voice recording. Your hourly pay rate will be established based on your performance in the application process; submissions with all requirements fulfilled will receive priority review.
