Senior Bookkeeper (Australia)

Job Overview:

We are looking for a Senior Bookkeeper with strong experience supporting Australian bookkeeping or accounting firms for one of our clients. This role will take ownership of higher-level bookkeeping responsibilities currently handled by the Director. The goal is to support the firm’s growth by bringing in someone who already understands Australian accounting requirements and can perform tasks independently with minimal training.

Client Overview:

The client is a small firm where the successful candidate will have the autonomy to get on with their work without being micromanaged. The Director is a registered BAS Agent who handles all BAS and IAS lodgements with the ATO. The Senior Bookkeeper will prepare BAS and IAS for the Director’s review and lodgement, so TPB registration is not required for this role.

Schedule:

Responsibilities:

  • End-to-end bookkeeping across multiple client accounts
  • Prepare BAS and IAS for the Director’s review and lodgement
  • Balance sheet reconciliations
  • Month-end close — own the process from start to finish
  • Process and review manual journal entries
  • Maintain and review general ledger accuracy
  • Oversee day-to-day bookkeeping, including accounts payable and accounts receivable
  • Payroll preparation in Xero, including: Onboarding new staff, Leave management, Weekly, fortnightly, and monthly salary processing, and Casual and permanent staff payroll
  • Prepare and lodge PayDay Super — from 1 July 2026, Australian employers must pay superannuation at the same time as wages (replacing quarterly super payments)
  • Ensure financial records comply with GST, BAS, PAYG, superannuation, and the TPB Code of Professional Conduct
  • Support the Director in managing multiple client accounts
  • Potentially manage and mentor junior bookkeeping staff as the team grows

Requirements:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in Australian bookkeeping specifically
  • Strong working knowledge of Australian accounting standards and ATO compliance
  • Hands-on experience with: BAS preparation, IAS reporting, Balance sheet reconciliation, Month-end close, and Manual journal entries
  • Experience supporting Australian accounting or bookkeeping firms
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong attention to detail and financial accuracy (this is critical for the role)

Software Stack Requirement:

You should be comfortable working across the full stack used day-to-day:

  • Xero (primary platform — required)
  • MYOB
  • QuickBooks Online (QBO)
  • Document-capture tools: Hubdoc, Dext, EzzyBills, or similar
  • Karbon (practice management)
  • Monday.com (workflow/task management)

Preferred Qualifications:
