Senior CAD Detailer (Custom Museum Fabrication)

Job Overview

As a Senior Exhibit Detailer, you will serve as the technical bridge between design concepts and physical reality for high-end museum, tradeshow, and commercial exhibits. This role requires an expert-level understanding of architectural millwork and cabinetry, specifically tailored for the complexities of scenic and faux structures. You will be responsible for engineering comprehensive 2D AutoCAD shop drawings and fabrication packages that integrate a diverse range of materials—including metals, plastics, and wood panels—alongside lighting and AV components. With a deep knowledge of shop processes and Computer Numerical Control coordination, you will ensure that every technical detail is production-ready, overseeing the lifecycle of a project from the initial kickoff through client approval and final build.

Schedule:
Morning meetings required, then flexible hours. East coast United States time zone preferred but flexible to accommodate international time differences (e.g., Philippines or India). Staff should be available for morning meetings in US time and can work evenings in their local timezone to deliver work by the following US morning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Drafting & Design: Engineering detailed 2D AutoCAD shop drawings and working drawings from design sketches, ensuring all dimensions, materials, and technical specifications are accurate for production.
  • Fabrication Packages: Create and manage comprehensive fabrication packages and Bills of Materials (BOM)/takeoffs for in-house production, project management, and client approval.
  • On-Site Coordination: Procure on-site field dimensions to ensure exhibit drawings reflect real-world site conditions and constraints.
  • Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Coordinate closely with Project Managers, CNC departments, and shop fabrication personnel to align construction details and resolve technical challenges.
  • Client & Revision Management: Lead the revision process by adjusting redlines and interacting directly with clients to secure final approval on technical details.
  • Project Leadership: Attend project kickoff meetings to review drawings and provide expert insight into fabrication techniques, equipment, and shop processes.

Requirements

  • Technical Expertise: 5+ years of experience drafting complex, detailed drawings using AutoCAD (specifically 2015–2023) within the exhibit, millwork, or cabinetry industries.
  • Industry Knowledge: Proven background in architectural millwork or high-end cabinetry with a strong understanding of fabrication techniques for scenic, commercial, and museum-grade exhibits.
  • Material Proficiency: Advanced knowledge of incorporating metals, plastics, wood panels, lighting, graphics, and audio-visual components into technical drawings.
  • Education: A.A., B.A., or Technical/Vocational degree in Architecture, Industrial Design, Building Science, or a related field.
  • Shop Experience: Extensive knowledge of shop processes, equipment capabilities, and CNC coordination requirements.
  • Communication: Strong ability to communicate technical requirements clearly to both clients and fabrication teams.
