Job Overview:

We are seeking a highly detail-oriented and compliance-driven Bookkeeper – Legal Practice to support the financial operations of a busy legal firm.

This role is critical to ensuring full compliance with the Legal Profession Uniform Law (NSW) and the NSW Law Society Trust Accounting Guidelines, with a strong focus on managing client trust accounts, maintaining accurate financial records, and supporting end-to-end legal billing and reporting processes.

You will work closely with internal stakeholders and an outsourced finance provider to ensure all financial processes are accurate, timely, and audit-ready.

Candidates with legal trust accounting experience are strongly preferred, however we are also open to finance professionals with strong bookkeeping backgrounds who demonstrate the ability to quickly adapt to legal trust accounting frameworks and regulatory requirements.

 

Schedule:

    • Monday - Friday, 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM (AEST/AEDT), with 1 hour unpaid break

What You’ll Be Doing

    • Manage trust account transactions and reconciliations in full compliance with NSW Legal Profession Uniform Law and Law Society Trust Accounting Rules
    • Process trust-to-office transfers, ensuring proper authorisation, documentation, and client notifications are maintained
    • Handle accounts receivable and accounts payable, including debtor management, payment allocation, and follow-ups
    • Perform bank reconciliations and balance sheet reconciliations with a high level of accuracy
    • Manage the end-to-end billing cycle, including invoice generation, disbursements, and aged debtor reporting
    • Prepare BAS, GST reporting, and trust-related tax adjustments
    • Produce monthly trust reconciliation reports for firm leadership and auditors
    • Support trust audit preparation and ongoing Law Society compliance requirements
    • Collaborate with an outsourced finance provider to ensure deadlines and reporting obligations are consistently met
    • Provide general finance and administrative support as required

 

What We’re Looking For

    • Minimum 3 years’ experience in bookkeeping or finance, ideally within a legal practice or professional services environment
    • Demonstrated experience working with or managing statutory trust accounts under NSW (or equivalent Australian) regulatory frameworks
    • Strong understanding of legal billing processes, trust reconciliation, and compliance obligations
    • Experience with Actionstep and Xero (or ability to quickly adapt to legal practice management systems)
    • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including reconciliations and reporting functions
    • Strong knowledge of GST, BAS preparation, and general accounting principles
    • High attention to detail with a process-driven and compliance-first mindset
    • Ability to work independently while coordinating with internal teams and external finance providers
    • Strong communication skills and ability to manage deadlines in a structured environment

    • This is a permanent work-from-home role under an Independent Contractor arrangement.
