Senior Bookkeeper (AU Accounting)

Job Overview

Our client is looking for a Senior Bookkeeper or Senior Accountant with strong experience supporting Australian accounting firms. This role is designed to take ownership of high-level bookkeeping responsibilities currently handled by the Director. The goal is to support the firm’s growth by bringing in an expert who already understands Australian accounting requirements and can perform tasks independently with minimal training. This is a critical role for the firm's expansion, starting part-time with the potential to transition to full-time as the business grows.

Schedule

  • Monday - Friday, 20 hours per week (Flexible within 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Sydney Time)

Responsibilities

  • Tax & Reporting: Prepare and manage BAS and IAS reporting; ensure all financial records comply with Australian accounting standards.
  • Financial Oversight: Perform balance sheet reconciliations, manage month-end closing procedures, and process manual journal entries.
  • Ledger Management: Maintain and review general ledger accuracy and oversee bookkeeping processes including AP and AR.
  • Payroll & Super: Support payroll preparation and assist with superannuation-related processes.
  • Client & Team Support: Support the Director in managing multiple client accounts and potentially oversee junior bookkeeping staff as the team grows.

Requirements

  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience in bookkeeping or accounting.
  • Industry Expertise: Strong experience working specifically with Australian accounting standards and supporting Australian accounting or bookkeeping firms.
  • Technical Mastery: Hands-on experience with BAS preparation, IAS reporting, balance sheet reconciliation, month-end closing, and manual journal entries.
  • Autonomy: Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high attention to detail and financial accuracy.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (Preferred).
  • Experience supporting multiple client accounts simultaneously.
  • Experience mentoring or supervising junior staff.
  • High proficiency with accounting platforms such as Xero, MYOB, or QuickBooks.

This is a permanent work-from-home role under an Independent Contractor arrangement. Candidates must have their own computer and reliable internet connection and are responsible for their own taxes and benefits.
