Financial Controller

 

Position Overview:

The Financial Controller will oversee and manage the organization's financial activities. This role is critical for ensuring the company’s financial operations run smoothly, accurately, and in compliance with all regulations. The Financial Controller will manage financial reporting, budgeting, financial planning, internal controls, and auditing processes. The position requires strong analytical skills, leadership, and a deep understanding of accounting principles and financial management.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Financial Reporting and Analysis:
    • Prepare and present accurate financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow) on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
    • Oversee the preparation of financial reports for internal and external stakeholders.
    • Analyze financial performance and trends, identifying areas of improvement or cost-saving opportunities.
  2. Budgeting and Forecasting:
    • Lead the preparation of the annual budget and rolling forecasts.
    • Work closely with department heads to ensure alignment with the company’s financial goals and objectives.
    • Monitor and report on budget performance, providing variance analysis and recommendations.
  3. Cash Flow and Liquidity Management:
    • Monitor and manage cash flow to ensure the company has sufficient liquidity to meet operational needs.
    • Optimize working capital and recommend strategies to improve cash flow.
  4. Internal Controls and Compliance:
    • Ensure strong internal controls are in place to safeguard company assets and minimize financial risk.
    • Ensure compliance with accounting standards, legal regulations, and company policies.
    • Lead audits (internal and external) and provide required documentation.
  5. Tax Planning and Compliance:
    • Oversee tax filings and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations.
    • Plan and execute tax strategies to minimize liabilities.
  6. Team Leadership and Development:
    • Manage and develop a finance team, including accountants and junior staff.
    • Provide training and guidance to ensure accurate financial processes and reporting.
    • Foster a collaborative and performance-driven environment within the finance team.
  7. Strategic Planning:
    • Collaborate with senior management in financial decision-making and strategic planning.
    • Provide financial insights and recommendations to support business growth and profitability.
  8. Other Duties:
    • Handle ad-hoc financial projects as needed.
    • Maintain relationships with external stakeholders, including auditors, banks, and vendors.

Requirements

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field (required).
    • CPA, CMA, or other relevant certifications (preferred).
  • Experience:
    • 5+ years of experience in financial management, accounting, or related field.
    • Proven experience in a financial controller or senior accounting role.
    • Strong knowledge of financial regulations, tax laws, and accounting standards (GAAP or IFRS).
  • Skills:
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Proficiency with financial software (e.g., QuickBooks, SAP, Oracle).
    • Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with financial modeling.
    • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive financial information.
  • Familiarity with both Canadian and U.S. tax laws
  • Proven experience managing a team of bookkeepers;
  • The ability to earn the respect of the existing team and external stakeholders, such as banks and customers.
