Management Accountant

Job Highlights

Contract: Independent Contractor
Schedule: Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:30 AM Sydney time with 30 mins unpaid break

Role Overview
We are looking for a detail-oriented and strategic Senior Management Accountant to take ownership of our financial data, reporting, and compliance across our global entities (AU, UK, US).

In this role, you will act as the "Financial Controller" of the day-to-day operations. You will manage external bookkeeping teams, own the month-end close process, and partner with the CFO to transition our finance function from transactional processing to high-value commercial insight. You will ensure that every number in Xero is audit-ready while helping the business understand what those numbers mean.

Key Responsibilities

1. Financial Control, Data Integrity & Bookkeeping Oversight

  • Quality Assurance: Own the quality and accuracy of financial data across all global entities prior to CFO review.

  • Vendor Management: Act as the primary operational contact for external bookkeepers; set clear standards, clarify coding queries, and enforce strict timelines.

  • General Ledger Management: Ensure Xero data accurately reflects business activity, specifically regarding revenue recognition, payroll allocations, accruals, prepayments, and intercompany transactions.

  • Reconciliations: Prepare and maintain robust balance sheet reconciliations (bank, payroll, revenue, etc.) in an audit-ready format.

  • Discrepancy Resolution: Investigate and resolve coding errors or discrepancies immediately, serving as the first line of defense before issues reach the CFO.

2. Month-End Close & Reporting

  • Process Coordination: Lead a disciplined month-end close process, ensuring consistency of accounting treatment across all regions (AU, UK, US).

  • Management Accounts: Prepare accurate and timely monthly management packs, including Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow statements.

  • Variance Analysis: Deliver clear commentary on variances against budget, forecast, and prior periods, explaining the "why" behind the numbers to the leadership team.

  • KPI Dashboarding: Develop and maintain dashboards aligned to SaaS and professional services metrics (e.g., Revenue per Client, MRR, Churn, Gross Margin, Utilization)

3. Budgeting, Forecasting & Commercial Support

  • Financial Planning: Own the maintenance of annual budgets and rolling forecasts.

  • Business Partnering: Work closely with budget owners to ensure forecasts are realistic; translate financial data into practical insights for non-finance stakeholders.

  • Scenario Analysis: Support ad-hoc financial analysis to inform pricing, resourcing, and investment decisions.

4. Systems, Process & Compliance

  • Process Improvement: Partner with the CFO to uplift finance maturity. Move the function from manual/transactional processes to automated, scalable systems.

  • Tech Stack: Optimize the use of the finance stack (Xero, ApprovalMax, Airwallex, etc.) and recommend integrations to improve efficiency.

  • Compliance: Assist with statutory reporting and tax compliance across jurisdictions (e.g., Payroll Tax, FBT, BAS/VAT, Year-End Accounts) under the direction of the CFO.

Requirements & Qualification
Essential Experience

  • Experience: 4–7 years of experience in management accounting, financial accounting, or commercial finance.

  • Qualification: CA/CPA qualified (or equivalent).

  • Multi-Entity: Proven experience working in multi-entity, multi-currency, or fast-growing international environments.

  • Technical Standards: Strong understanding of Accounting Standards (AU/UK/US preferred), accrual accounting, and month-end reconciliation processes.

Technical Skills

  • Xero Mastery: Deep experience with Xero and its ecosystem of apps.

  • Spreadsheets: Advanced Google Sheets/Excel skills (Index/Match, Pivot Tables, financial modeling).

  • SaaS/Agency Background: Experience in Digital Agencies, SaaS, or Professional Services is highly preferred.

Soft Skills & Traits

    • System Mindset: You don't just follow the process; you improve it. You enjoy fixing broken workflows.

    • Communication: You can explain "Accruals" to a salesperson without using jargon. You are comfortable pushing back on external bookkeepers to ensure quality.

    • Attention to Detail: You spot the one transaction coded to the wrong cost center immediately.

    • Autonomy: You are comfortable working with ambiguity in a scaling business and can manage your own deadlines.

Independent Contractor Perks

  • Health Insurance Coverage

  • Permanent work from home

  • Immediate hiring

  • Steady freelance job

Please note that since this is a permanent work-from-home position and an “Independent Contractor” arrangement, the candidates must have their own computer and internet connection. They will handle their own benefits and taxes. The professional fees are on hourly rates and the rate depends on your performance in the application process.
