Cost Accountant

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM (PST), with a 30-minute unpaid break
Total Weekly Hours: 40 hours

 

The Cost Accountant will be responsible for preparing, maintaining, and analyzing product costs for an apparel brand. This role works closely with sourcing, production, and merchandising teams to ensure accurate costing, margin analysis, and inventory valuation.

 

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain accurate product costings for apparel items, including materials, labor, overhead, freight, duties, and finishing costs.

  • Analyze Bills of Materials (BOMs), production routings, and labor standards to ensure accurate cost allocation.

  • Review and monitor production costs, work-in-progress (WIP), and inventory valuation.

  • Perform cost variance analysis (material, labor, and overhead) and investigate discrepancies.

  • Partner with sourcing, production, and merchandising teams to evaluate costing scenarios, margin targets, and pricing strategies.

  • Track and analyze vendor costing, factory quotes, and manufacturing efficiencies.

  • Support month-end close activities related to inventory and cost of goods sold (COGS).

  • Maintain standard costs and update them based on changes in materials, labor rates, or production methods.

  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and margin analysis for new and existing product lines.

  • Ensure compliance with internal controls and support audits as needed.

  • Prepare regular cost reports and provide actionable insights to management for decision-making.

 

Requirements

  • 3–5+ years of cost accounting experience, preferably within apparel, manufacturing, or consumer goods.

  • Strong understanding of apparel costing, including materials, labor, overhead, freight, duties, and landed costs.

  • Experience with inventory accounting, standard costing, and cost of goods sold (COGS) analysis.

  • Proficiency with ERP systems for cost tracking and inventory management (A2000 preferred but not required).

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, formulas, and cost models.

  • Experience working with Bills of Materials (BOMs) and production routings.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform cost variance analysis and identify root causes.

  • Knowledge of month-end close processes and inventory-related financial reporting.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to collaborate cross-functionally with sourcing, production, and merchandising teams.

  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
