Senior Unity Developer – VR Simulation & Biometric Integration

Senior Unity Developer – VR Simulation & Biometric Integration

Location: Remote (APAC-friendly; Philippines preferred)
Working Hours: 11:00am – 7:30pm Melbourne (AEDT)
Employment Type: Full-time employee
Contract Term: 12-month R&D project (extension possible)
Project: WorkSafe-Funded Workforce Mental Health VR Program (Australia)

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Unity Developer to support the delivery of a WorkSafe-funded VR simulation program focused on workforce wellbeing, stress resilience, and conflict-management training.

This is a hands-on individual contributor role, responsible for building and integrating three VR simulation modules in Unity for standalone Meta Quest headsets. You will work day-to-day with an Australia-based project team, receive technical guidance from a Spain-based XR platform and specialist team, and collaborate closely with designers and clinicians.

The project is delivered within an agile R&D environment, featuring structured review cycles, pilot deployment, and clear milestone-based delivery.

Why This Role

This role sits at the intersection of immersive technology, evidence-based design, and real-world impact.

The project is part of a WorkSafe-funded initiative with a clearly defined scope, real end users, and measurable outcomes—not a speculative product build. You will contribute to a program combining deep VR/XR development expertise with clinical input and a proven delivery approach for enterprise and healthcare-adjacent environments.

If you are motivated by building immersive technology that is grounded in evidence and deployed in real-world settings beyond entertainment, this role offers the opportunity to work on a project with genuine, practical impact.

What You’ll Be Working On

  • A standalone Unity-based VR application (Meta Quest)

  • Three integrated simulation modules:

    • Depot Simulation – environmental and workflow stress exposure

    • On-Road Stress Exposure – driving scenarios and fatigue management

    • Conflict Management – NPC-based interaction and de-escalation training

  • Biometric-informed feedback loops and safety controls

  • Session logging and pilot-phase analytics

  • Preparing the application for later integration into a broader XR platform via a standard third-party integration framework

Key Responsibilities

Unity & VR Simulation Development (Primary Focus)

  • Design and build immersive VR environments and scenarios in Unity

  • Implement NPC behaviour, interaction systems, and branching scenario logic

  • Develop adaptive in-experience responses (e.g. prompts, pauses) informed by biometric indicators

  • Optimise performance, rendering, and memory usage for standalone VR headsets

  • Translate design and clinical inputs into stable, high-quality interactive experiences

Biometric & Safety Integration

  • Integrate real-time biometric inputs (e.g. HRV, voice stress indicators) into Unity workflows

  • Implement safety logic including thresholds, pause/exit mechanisms, and escalation handling

  • Collaborate with clinical team members to ensure wellbeing and safety requirements are correctly implemented

  • Support pilot testing and iterative refinement of biometric responsiveness

Supporting Backend & Integration Work

  • Implement supporting backend services or integrations for:

    • Session logging and event telemetry

    • Pilot usage analytics and reporting

  • Build and consume secure APIs to support future platform integration

  • Work within a lightweight AWS-based backend environment as required

  • Support cross-module integration and regression testing

Note: This role focuses on application-level integration and does not own enterprise backend architecture or DevOps.

Agile R&D Collaboration

  • Work in weekly sprint cycles with clear milestones and review points

  • Participate in short daily or near-daily syncs with the Spain-based technical team to unblock delivery and maintain alignment

  • Collaborate with designers, clinicians, and enterprise stakeholders during structured Q&A and testing cycles

  • Produce clear documentation, build notes, and handover materials throughout the project

Working Hours & Collaboration Model

  • Core working hours are 11:00am – 7:30pm Melbourne time, enabling:

    • Daytime overlap with the Australia-based team

    • A short daily sync with the Spain-based team in the early evening

  • Day-to-day reporting is to the Australia-based project lead, with technical support and guidance from the Spain-based XR/platform team

Required Skills & Experience

  • 4+ years of professional Unity development experience (VR/XR strongly preferred)

  • Strong C# and Unity scripting skills

  • Experience delivering real-time, simulation-based, or interactive applications

  • Demonstrated ability to optimise applications for standalone VR performance

  • Experience integrating APIs or backend services into Unity applications

  • Familiarity with agile workflows and iterative, milestone-driven delivery

Nice to Have

Experience with:

  • Biometric or physiological data integration

  • NPC behaviour systems or branching dialogue logic

  • Training simulations or safety-critical environments

  • Wellbeing, training, or healthcare-adjacent technology

  • Enterprise or grant-funded R&D projects

Working Style

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Enjoys hands-on development and technical problem-solving

  • Communicates clearly across distributed, cross-functional teams

  • Is comfortable working in research-driven, iterative environments

  • Takes ownership of quality, performance, and delivery within a defined scope
